Growing up I heard, “hard work pays off”, I heard that ” long hours will get you noticed by the boss”. Today as I look a some of the most successful people, taking exotic vacations, spending quality time with loved ones and maintaining a healthy life style, I question those old ideals. Maybe we just need to work smarter and get the best out of our most productive hours, doing the things we love.

Here are a few things to help you on the road to a smarter more productive work life:

A. Develop a routine and stick to it: If you have found that you tend to be more productive in the mornings, create a structure, develop and maintain a priority list and be disciplined.

B. Do the most important things first. It is true, you cannot do it all….. I have tried. But! you can do the most important things first. Once you get those done not only have you accomplished something on your “To Do List”, but you will feel good about it. Once you feel good you will be motivated to do more.

C. Do not procrastinate. The biggest “thief” is procrastination. You can never get back lost or stolen time so don’t fall victim to procrastination. Address deadline driven activities first. Once those are out of the way you can move on to the “lighter”, more fun stuff. This will again keep your level of motivation high.

D. Don’t get sucked in by long winded conversations. Get to the point and stay there and/or move on.

E. Never over delegate. You know your business best. Keep your fingers on the pulse of the business and have fun. The more fun you have doing what you love, the more motivated you are………..the more successful you become!!

In the world of Cyber Space we must protect ourselves just as we do in the non-virtual (real) world. If we take a commonsensical approach to our information, share this approach with our children and the most vulnerable in our society, this includes our seniors, we will see a reduction in cyber crime.

The following, according to Cyber security expert, Brent MacLean, may not eliminate cyber crime, but it will sure go a long way towards reducing it:

Protect your e-identity- use different passwords for different accounts; ensure the passwords are complicated enough so as not to be hacked and do change your password frequently. This may seem like a cumbersome task, but you will be grateful, should you ever be the victim of a “hacking” scheme.

Activate your firewall-they were created for a purpose. Firewalls are the first line of defense against bogus sites, viruses and even hackers.

Use anti-virus software- They do help prevent computer “infection”. Updates are usually free so take advantage of them and when your subscription expires, do renew it, it will prevent a lot of hardship for you in the long run.

Install anti-spyware software- update this software as often as it asks you to and avoid coming under attack by Spyware.

Ensure your operating systems are updated- Stay current with the latest updates to your applications and operating systems.

Back-up your files- If your information is important to you, back it up and keep the files in a separate location form your computer. In the unlikely or unfortunate event such as fire or flood, your information will be protected-Or use a “data back -up service”.

Protect your wireless network (WiFi)-You may be supplying internet service to your neighbourhood and not even know it. Prevent intrusion, when you purchase your router, have it installed by a professional if you do not feel confident in doing so yourself…..”an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.

Delete emails from unknown senders-If you do not recognize the sender’s name, don’t open the email. Delete it immediately! It could be that dreaded virus you have been hearing about.

Surf smart, Surf safe- If you are adding personal information such as your name or address on- line, make sure you have enabled the privacy settings and the site is a secure one.

Don’t be afraid to make the call-If you observe questionable content (such as child exploitation) call 911, if you suspect a cyber crime or scam, make the call. If you have computer maintenance challenges, call a licensed vendor or technician.

Check out the RCMP’s site for more information or visit www.jbm.net

For security experts such as Steven Domenikos, the rise of social networking has meant the arrival of a troubling new phenomenon called “virtual kidnapping.”

Here’s how it originally worked: Thieves would dial at random, trying to take advantage of surprise, and claim that “your daughter” had been kidnapped. People without daughters could see the scam right away, but in countries where actual kidnapping is endemic, thieves could often wring some money or jewellery out of desperate parents before they contacted their children.

Now these same criminals are using Facebook. They search for profiles, looking for young people bragging about an upcoming vacation. Armed with the dates and location, they target parents, hoping that their kids are out of contact for hours or days.

The crime is common in Central and South America. Domenikos, CEO of Massachusetts-based IdentityTruth, says he expects to see this newer, more sophisticated version hit North America soon.

“Bottom line: The individual consumer is on their own. There is no overseer, there is no policy, there is no governmental act that is going to help,” says Domenikos. “Unless you are very careful, you leave digital footprints everywhere.”

Mojave Air and Spaceport, California
December 7, 2009

Virgin Founder, Sir Richard Branson and Space Ship One (SS1) designer, Burt Rutan, today reveal SS2 to the public for the first time since construction of the world’s first manned commercial spaceship began in 2007. SS2 has been designed to take many thousands of private astronauts into space after test programming and all required U.S. government licensing has been completed.

The unveiling represents another major milestone in Virgin Galactic’s quest to develop the World’s first commercial space line providing private sector access to space using an environmentally benign launch system for people, payload and science. The spaceship draws on the experience developed during the successful flights of SS1 in 2004, which won the Ansari X-Prize for completing the world’s first manned private space flights. The SS2 design will be refined and completed during an extensive test flying program to commence shortly, and it will be an entirely new vehicle capable of carrying up to 6 passenger astronauts and up to 2 pilot astronauts into space on a sub-orbital flight.

The unveil itself will take place at Mojave Air and Spaceport as darkness falls on the famous aviation and spaceflight location. Subject to certain U.S. regulatory requirements that will guide the unveiling, SS2 will be attached to her WK2 mother-ship which was last year unveiled and named EVE after Sir Richard Branson’s mother. In the future, WK2 will carry SS2 to above 50,000 feet (16 kilometres) before the spaceship is dropped and fires her rocket motor to launch into space from that altitude. In honour of a long tradition of using the word Enterprise in the naming of Royal Navy, US Navy, NASA vehicles and even science fiction spacecraft, Governor Schwarzenegger of California and Governor Richardson of New Mexico will today christen SS2 with the name Virgin Space Ship (VSS) ENTERPRISE. This represents not only an acknowledgement to that name’s honorable past but also looks to the future of the role of private enterprise in the development of the exploration, industrialisation and human habitation of space.

The emergence of new commercial space companies like Virgin Galactic will be an engine for employment, growth and the creation of a new technology and science base in the United States. Recent research has indicated that 12,500 jobs have already been created by the new space companies; the Virgin Galactic project alone is creating significant opportunities for employment in both the company itself and with suppliers in both California and New Mexico. Approximately 600 people are now working on activities relating to the project and it is estimated that this figure will rise to over 1,100 jobs during the peak of the construction phase at the space port and through the introduction of the commercial space vehicles into regular astronaut service.

Both WK2 and SS2 represent state of the art environmentally sensitive industrial development in their use of carbon composite materials technology, which has now been identified as a key future contributor to the increasingly urgent requirement by the commercial aviation sector for dramatically more fuel efficient aircraft. WK2 is powered by four Pratt and Whitney PW308A engines, which are amongst the most powerful. economic and efficient commercial jet engines available making it a mould breaker in carbon efficiency. SS2 will be powered by a unique hybrid rocket motor, which is currently under development.

The twin fuselage and central payload area configuration allow for easy access to WK2 and to the spaceship for passengers and crew; the design also aids operational efficiencies and turnaround times. The mothership has now also completed a year of rigorous and successful first phase flight testing prior to today’s attachment of SS2.

Commenting on the unveiling, Sir Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin Galactic said: “This is truly a momentous day. The team has created not only a world first but also a work of art. The unveil of SS2 takes the Virgin Galactic vision to the next level and continues to provide tangible evidence that this ambitious project is not only moving rapidly, but also making tremendous progress towards our goal of safe commercial operation”.

Burt Rutan, Founder of Scaled Composites added: “All of us at Scaled are tremendously excited by the capabilities of both the mother-ship and SS2. Today is the culmination of a dream that began many decades ago, was stimulated by Paul Allen’s funding of our X-Prize winning SS1 and then moved forward to commercial reality by Sir Richard and Virgin’s visionary investment in a new future for space transportation”.
